James Dean Stone

KONICA MINOLTA DIGITAL CAMERA My father was named after me. No, really! He had been given this awful name at birth (I won’t even tell you what it was), but when I was about 16 years old, he legally changed his name to James Dean Stone. How cool is that?

What makes me tick? What makes any of us tick? We are but the sum total of our choices and experiences in life, not to mention the books we read and the friends we choose. That being said, I am first and foremost a Christian. I truly do believe in and follow the God of the Holy Bible. I hope you give me that prerogative. Even if you don’t, I choose to give you the prerogative to place your faith in what you choose. After all, we are free moral agents, even in this arena. Especially in this arena. If I couldn’t choose, then it wouldn’t be faith.

I love to read and write. I read more than I write, but I hope that will change, or do I? I think if I had to stop reading in order to write, I might figure, “What’s the point?” That would be like owning a ski resort and never having time to ski, or a pro shop and never having time to golf. Oh! Horror of horrors!

I have a few published articles in a few different magazines but unfortunately, it was nothing I was paid for. Still, I can say that I have some published works.

At the date of this writing, I am 50 years old. I’ve always loved to write, but life kept getting in the way, or rather, I kept allowing life to get in the way. Now, my children are grown and living their own lives and today both my wife and my life have given me liberty to pursue writing as more than a hobby. I hope to learn enough about the craft as I write over the next 10 or 15 years (God willing) to finance my retirement when the time comes. I don’t have any false allusions. This won’t happen overnight. I am a work in progress. This progress began about 2 months ago as I put pen to paper and allowed the first chapter of my very first novel to come to life. Now, I am barely into chapter 4.

I used to think I was a king when I wrote. My office chair was my throne. My characters and stories were my subjects who bowed to my will. But then I realized that if I had to command them to go and do and say, the world I was creating wasn’t worth reading about. So, now I am the servant and my characters and stories are potentates who go, do, and say what they will. I simply record what they tell me to record.

    BINGO –

I used to think I was a king when I wrote. My office chair was my throne. My characters and stories were my subjects who bowed to my will. But then I realized that if I had to command them to go and do and say, the world I was creating wasn’t worth reading about. So, now I am the servant and my characters and stories are potentates who go, do, and say what they will. I simply record what they tell me to record.

Let the words reveal themselves, with the help of the Holy Spirit that moves through us because we are blessed!
